Shakti Kroopkin Paints Liberation, an interview

Shakti Kroopkin (she/they) is a contemporary abstract artist known for their dynamic, intuitive works that blend urban energy with natural forms. Born in Chicago in 1976, she began painting in oils at the age of seven and later graduated from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 1998. In 2005, Shakti relocated to New Mexico, where she currently resides in Los Cerrillos with her son, Malachi, along with their dogs, chickens, and a rooster.

Kroopkin’s artistic practice is deeply rooted in spontaneity and emotional expression. Their process often begins with bold gestures using sumi ink applied with a bamboo brush, followed by layers of oil paint, oil sticks, and graphite. This technique results in richly textured, multidimensional compositions that explore themes of transformation, memory, and the subconscious. Her work frequently features fantastical beings that serve as guides, inviting viewers into imaginative realms beyond the constraints of logic and reality.

In addition to her painting, Kroopkin is an active member of the art community. She opened Mad Contemporary Gallery and Art Center in Madrid, New Mexico, in January 2023, where she directs, curates, teaches, and exhibits her work.  Shakti’s art has been showcased in over 50 galleries and exhibitions across the United States and is part of international collections. Kroopkin is also affiliated with Walter Wickiser Gallery in New York, NY, Jezebel Gallery in Madrid, NM, Abstract Picnic Art Collective and the Santa Fe Society of Artists.

Kroopkin’s contributions extend to education and community engagement. They facilitate abstract art workshops, host queer-centered art events, and teach art in public and private schools. Kroopkin’s work encompasses not only paintings but also steel sculptures, live painting performances, and art clothing.
